Stray Hold Policy Update:

Compassion, for animals and for the people and families who love them, is at the heart of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s mission. In recent days, we recognize that this guiding value was overshadowed by decisions that felt inflexible and harsh, rather than rooted in understanding and care. We are deeply saddened by the situation and the pain it’s caused. While we are grateful that reunification ultimately occurred, we feel it is important to acknowledge the experience and thoughtfully address our stray hold policy.
Through many meaningful conversations and after carefully listening to the comments, emails, and feedback shared by our community, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has made the decision to update our “dead-end” microchip policy. Moving forward, even if a microchip is unregistered or does not immediately connect us with a pet’s owner, that animal will be held for a full seven-day stray hold period.
Additionally, we will continue encouraging and educating the public on the importance of microchipping and keeping the microchip current and registered. We are proud that 715 pets have been reunited with their families in the last year, and we will continue to work hard to reunite pets with their families. Although our policy has followed the current county ordinance of a 3-day stray hold, this change is intended to give families more time to search for their beloved pets and to better support the possibility of reunification.

Protocol

Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (HCPRC) is the county-designated shelter where stray/lost animals are held so their owners can find them. However, they allow us to accept and hold strays if we have space available.
